Blur & Pixelate Image — Hide Faces and Plates

Browser tool that pixelates, blurs or blacks out the parts of a photo you mark

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Drop the photo with something to hide here

One JPG, PNG or WebP file up to 50 MB. Paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). Nothing leaves your browser.

Effect

For text (licence plates, ID numbers, addresses) black out is the safe choice. Light pixelation or blur can sometimes be read back.

A share of the photo's shorter edge. Higher hides more.

Draw with

Drag on the preview to mark what to hide (touch works too). You can mark several areas.

Nothing is hidden yet.

There is no automatic face or plate detection yet. Mark the areas yourself.

Saved at the original resolution in the original format (JPG and WebP at quality 92). The name gets -blurred added.

The picture is redrawn, so the original EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over; the photo's rotation is applied. Nothing is uploaded.

What it is

A redaction tool for photos and screenshots you are about to share. Cover a passer-by’s face, a licence plate, the name and address on a parcel label, or a phone or account number in a screenshot with pixelation, blur or a solid black box. Mark the areas by dragging rectangles on the preview or by painting with a brush.

How to use

  1. Drop a photo on the dashed area or press Choose a photo. Screenshots can be pasted with Ctrl+V.
  2. Pick an Effect: Pixelate, Blur or Black out. Pixelate and Blur have a Strength.
  3. Choose Rectangle or Brush and drag on the preview to mark what to hide; touch works too.
  4. Fix mistakes with Undo last area or Clear all. Apply to the whole photo blurs everything.
  5. Press Save photo to download it at the original resolution.

How it works

  • Pixelate splits the area into squares the size of the strength and fills each with its average colour. Strength is a share of the shorter edge: 3% on a 4000 × 3000 photo gives 90 px squares.
  • Blur shrinks the picture strongly and scales it back up smoothly. This method is used instead of the canvas filter so every browser, including Safari, gives the same result.
  • Black out covers the area with solid black, the surest way to hide text.
  • Areas are stored relative to the picture size, so the scaled-down preview and the full-size file are covered in the same places.
  • Saving keeps the format (JPEG and WebP at quality 92) and adds -blurred to the name.

Examples

To hide Suggestion
Parcel labels, receipts, details in screenshots Black out with rectangles
Faces of passers-by Pixelate at 3-5% with rectangles
Licence plates Black out, or pixelate at 5% or more
Busy background behind a person Blur with the brush

To add a credit line to many photos use the watermark tool; to cut parts off altogether use the image cropper.

FAQ

Pixelate, blur or black out — which should I use?

For text such as ID or account numbers, addresses and licence plates, black out is the safe choice; light pixelation or blur can leave enough shape to read it back. For faces or backgrounds, pixelate or blur at a strength of 3% or more.

Does it find faces automatically?

Not yet. Automatic detection can miss faces, so for now you mark every area yourself with a rectangle or the brush. Look over the preview carefully before saving to check nothing was missed.

Can the hidden part be recovered later?

Not from the saved file. The covered pixels are redrawn before saving, so the original content is not inside the file. Keep your original if you might need it; before saving, Undo last area and Clear all let you correct mistakes.

Is the location data removed too?

Yes. The picture is redrawn, so EXIF data such as the GPS position and camera details is not included.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Marking and saving happen entirely in your browser, which matters most for pictures with personal details.
