Character Counter — Words, Letters and Bytes
A character and word counter with bytes and platform length presets
Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
When on, your text is stored only in this browser (never sent to a server). Turning it off deletes the saved draft.

A simple estimate: characters with spaces divided by 200.
Target length
What it is
This character counter shows live totals as you type or paste: characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, lines, paragraphs and sentences. There is no length limit, so a whole article works. It also reports byte size and checks your text against common length limits with a progress bar. Nothing is sent to a server.
How to use
- Type or paste text into the box. The numbers update immediately.
- Pick a target such as X post, Instagram caption, meta description or YouTube title, or choose Custom and enter your own limit.
- Watch the bar and the remaining count. If you go over, the bar turns red and shows how many characters to cut.
- Press Clear to start over.
How it works
- Characters are grapheme clusters as defined by Unicode Standard Annex #29, using the browser’s Intl.Segmenter. Letters with combining accents, emoji and flags each count once.
- Characters without spaces leave out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Words are runs of text separated by whitespace, so Chinese, Japanese or Korean text written without spaces counts as one word per unbroken run. Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines. Sentences use Unicode sentence boundaries.
- UTF-8 bytes come from the standard TextEncoder: 1 byte for ASCII, 2 to 3 bytes for most other scripts and 4 for most emoji.
- EUC-KR style bytes are a simple estimate used for Korean systems: 1 byte for ASCII and 2 bytes for every other character.
- Manuscript pages are characters divided by 200, the size of a traditional Korean manuscript sheet. It is a plain estimate that ignores indentation rules.
- Presets compare against the plain character count. Platforms may weight some characters differently, for example links or East Asian characters on X, so treat the preset as a close guide and check the platform’s own counter for edge cases.
Examples
| Text | Characters | Without spaces | Words | UTF-8 bytes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hello World | 11 | 10 | 2 | 11 |
| 안녕하세요 세계 | 8 | 7 | 2 | 22 |
| 👍 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| café (with e + combining accent) | 4 | 4 | 1 | 6 |
FAQ
Does the character counter count emoji correctly?
Yes. It counts what you see, so an emoji, a flag or a family emoji built from several code points counts as one character. Byte counts are larger because most emoji take 4 bytes or more in UTF-8.
Why do character counters disagree with each other?
Some count UTF-16 code units, some count code points and some count visible characters. This tool counts grapheme clusters, the units defined in Unicode Standard Annex #29, which match how people count.
How long should a meta description be?
Search engines cut snippets by pixel width rather than a fixed count, so around 155 to 160 characters is a common target. The 160 preset is a guide, not a guarantee of what will be shown.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing is stored by default. If you tick Save draft in this browser, your text is kept in this browser only (about half a second after you stop typing) so a refresh does not lose it. Unticking it deletes the saved draft, and the Clear button empties the box.
