JPG to AVIF Converter — Smaller Photos
Browser converter from JPG, PNG and WebP to AVIF with a size comparison
Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
Drop JPG, PNG or WebP files here
Convert up to 50 JPG, PNG or WebP files at once to AVIF, up to 50 MB each. Files never leave your browser.
Conversion settings
Each file shows the original and AVIF size and how much smaller it got, with a total on top. A photo can take several seconds, so files are converted one after another.
AVIF quality uses a different scale from JPG, so the numbers are not comparable. The default 50 is the default of Squoosh, Google's image compression app.
AVIF compression is heavy: a photo takes from a few seconds to tens of seconds. Fast saves time for a slightly larger file.
The AVIF encoder (about 3.5 MB) is downloaded once, from this site, the first time you convert. Your images are not uploaded.
EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over; the photo orientation is applied. Files never leave your browser.
What it is
A converter that turns JPG, PNG and WebP images into AVIF to save space. AVIF uses the compression of the AV1 video codec, so at similar quality it is often much smaller than JPG. Use it to speed up image-heavy pages such as blogs and product listings, or simply to save storage. Each file shows its original and AVIF size and how much it shrank.
How to use
- Drop JPG, PNG or WebP files on the dashed area or click Choose images.
- Set the AVIF quality. Start at the default 50 and adjust after looking at the result.
- Choose an encoding speed: slow is a little smaller, fast takes less time.
- Optionally limit the long edge and decide whether to keep transparency.
- Download each file or use Download all (ZIP). The total size and saving are shown on top.
How it works
- Encoder: @jsquash/avif, the libavif (aom) encoder used by Squoosh, compiled to WebAssembly. The encoder file (about 3.5 MB) is downloaded once from this site on first use.
- Quality: 1–100, default 50 (the Squoosh default). Higher is sharper and larger.
- Speed: slow 4, normal 6, fast 8 on libavif’s 0–10 scale (higher is faster).
- Bit depth: 8 bits per channel, the same as ordinary photos and web images.
- Size limit: pictures above 40 megapixels on a computer, or 16,777,216 pixels on a touch-screen device such as a phone or tablet, are scaled down for memory reasons, and the card says so. If memory still runs out, the card suggests a smaller long edge or the Fast speed.
- Metadata: EXIF (camera data, GPS) is not carried over; orientation is applied.
Examples
| Original | Setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| photo.jpg 4032×3024 | quality 50, normal | photo.avif, sizes shown on the card |
| logo.png (transparent) | quality 60, keep transparency | logo.avif with a transparent background |
| 10 product images | quality 50, long edge 1600 px | 10 files in one ZIP, total saving shown |
If the recipient cannot open AVIF, convert back with AVIF to JPG. If WebP is the safer choice for your site, compare with JPG to WebP.
FAQ
How much smaller does AVIF make my photos?
There is no fixed ratio; it depends on the picture and the quality setting. Ordinary photos often shrink a lot at quality 50, while JPGs that are already heavily compressed shrink less. Every file shows its before and after size, so you can check.
Isn't quality 50 low?
AVIF's quality number uses a different scale from JPG, so the numbers are not comparable. 50 is the AVIF default of Squoosh, Google's image compression app. Open the result and raise the quality if it is not enough.
Why is it slow?
AVIF compression is heavy, and a large photo takes from a few seconds to tens of seconds. Choose the fast speed or limit the long edge to speed it up. The work runs in a separate thread (Web Worker) so the page stays responsive.
Where can AVIF files be opened?
In Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 16.4 or later and on current Windows, macOS and Android. Some older programs and upload forms do not accept it, so keep your originals.
Is PNG transparency kept?
Yes. AVIF stores an alpha channel, so transparency is kept by default; you can fill it with a color instead.
