What is a QR code reader?
It finds a QR code inside an image file and shows you the text stored in it. It works with screenshots someone sent you, saved photos, or an image you copied from your screen. It also tells you whether the content is a web address, Wi-Fi details or a contact card and lays it out so it is easy to read. At the moment it reads image files only; there is no camera scanning.
How to use
- Press Choose image file, or drag an image onto the dashed area.
- If you have copied an image, press Ctrl+V (⌘V on Mac) on this page to paste it.
- When the content and type appear, press Copy to take the text.
- For a web address, check it and then press Open yourself. Nothing opens automatically.
How it works
- Images with a long edge over 2000 px are scaled down before reading, which is plenty for an ordinary code.
- The image is decoded as it is first; if that fails, the colors are inverted and it is tried once more. Transparent PNGs are placed on a white background.
- Types are detected by prefix:
WIFI:is Wi-Fi,BEGIN:VCARDa contact, mailto:email,SMSTO:orsms:SMS,tel:phone andhttp(s)://a URL. Anything else is plain text. - Wi-Fi codes follow the ZXing Wi-Fi format. The tool unescapes them and lists name, security and password. The password is masked until you press Show.
- For contacts it reads the vCard name, organization, phone, email and address fields.

FAQ
It says no QR code was found. What can I do?
A code that is tiny or blurry in the picture is hard to read. Crop the image so the code fills most of it, or use a sharper, head-on photo. Inverted colors are retried automatically, but heavily crumpled or partly covered codes may still fail.
Is it safe to open a link from a QR code?
Not automatically. You cannot judge a link by looking at the code, and QR codes are used for phishing. This tool shows the address as text first and only opens it in a new tab when you click Open. Do not open links from codes you do not trust.
Can I scan with my camera?
Not yet. The reader works from image files, such as a saved photo or screenshot. Choose a file, drop it on the page, or copy an image and paste it.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded inside your browser and never uploaded, so it is fine to check a code that contains a Wi-Fi password.
