Updated 2026-10-04The starting values (10,000 steps, 170 cm, 70 kg, moderate pace) are an example. Replace them with your own.
1 to 200,000, as counted by your phone or pedometer.
100 to 250 cm. Without a measured stride, stride is estimated as height × 0.415.
20 to 300 kg
20 to 200 cm. Walk 10 steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. Leave empty to estimate from height.
7.06 km, about 375 kcal
Result
- Distance
- 7.06 km
- Calories burned
- 375 kcal
- Extra calories from walking
- 277 kcal
- Time walking (estimate)
- about 85 min
- Stride
- 70.6 cm (estimated from height)
- Reference: 10,000 steps
- 7.06 km · 375 kcal
Calories burned include what you would burn at rest. The extra calories from walking are lower.
The math with your numbers
- Stride = 170 cm × 0.415 = 70.55 cm
- Distance = 10,000 steps × 70.55 cm = 7.06 km
- Time = 7.06 km / 5 km/h = 84.7 min
- Calories = 3.8 MET × 70 kg × 1.411 h = 375.3 kcal
A step count can’t tell hills, stairs or pace, so the result is an estimate. The 0.415 stride factor is a widely used rule of thumb; a measured stride is more accurate.
Source: walking METs by pace (2.5 mph 3.0, 2.8-3.4 mph 3.8, 3.5-3.9 mph 4.8, 4.0-4.4 mph 5.5) are from Herrmann S.D. et al., “2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities” (J Sport Health Sci 2024;13(1):6-12; retrieved 2026-10-04). Time uses the middle of each speed range.
What it is
The steps to calories calculator turns the number on your phone or pedometer into the distance you walked and the energy you used. It estimates stride from your height or uses a stride you measured, then applies the MET value for your walking pace. It also estimates walking time and shows a 10,000-step reference for easy comparison. It opens with 10,000 steps at a moderate pace for someone 170 cm tall weighing 70 kg.
How to use
- Enter your step count.
- Enter your height and weight.
- If you have measured your stride, enter it; otherwise leave it empty.
- Choose your usual walking pace.
- Read distance, calories, walking time and the formula.
How it works
- Stride: the measured value, or height × 0.415 (a common rule of thumb).
- Distance (km) = steps × stride (cm) / 100,000.
- Time = distance / speed, using 4, 5, 6 and 6.7 km/h, the middle of each Compendium speed range.
- Calories = MET × weight (kg) × time (h), with walking METs 3.0, 3.8, 4.8 and 5.5 from the 2024 Adult Compendium.
- Extra calories from walking = (MET − 1) × weight × time.
Examples
| Steps | Height · weight | Pace | Distance | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | 170 cm · 70 kg | Moderate | about 7.06 km | about 375 kcal |
| 8,000 | 160 cm · 55 kg | Brisk | about 5.31 km | about 234 kcal |
| 10,000 (60 cm stride) | 160 cm · 70 kg | Brisk | 6 km | 336 kcal |
Good to know
Step counters have their own errors, and a wrist device and a phone in your pocket can disagree on the same walk. Use the result as a rough guide and compare days with the same method. For other activities see the calories burned calculator, and for runs the running pace calculator.
FAQ
How far and how many calories is 10,000 steps?
At 170 cm the estimated stride is about 70.6 cm, so 10,000 steps is about 7.06 km. At 70 kg and a moderate pace (about 5 km/h, 3.8 MET) that burns about 375 kcal.
How do I get my stride length?
Walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. Without it, the tool uses height × 0.415, a widely used rule of thumb.
Why choose a walking pace?
Faster walking takes more effort over the same distance. The 2024 Adult Compendium lists 2.5 mph walking at 3.0 MET and brisk 3.5-3.9 mph walking at 4.8 MET, so the tool uses the value for your pace.
What if I climbed stairs or hills?
A step count can’t show slope, so the result assumes level ground. For hiking or stair climbing, the calories burned calculator with that activity fits better.
How is walking time estimated?
Distance divided by the chosen speed. Moderate pace uses 5 km/h, the middle of the Compendium’s 2.8-3.4 mph range.
