Statistics — Mean, Median and Deviation
Summarize a numeric dataset with clearly defined statistical measures
Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
What it does
Paste a numeric dataset to calculate its size, sum, mean, median, minimum, maximum, range, quartiles and dispersion. Population and sample results appear separately so you can choose the denominator appropriate to your dataset. These are descriptive statistics; the tool does not perform hypothesis tests or infer a distribution.
How to use
- Paste up to 10,000 numbers separated by whitespace, commas or semicolons.
- Use a dot for decimal fractions; write 1250 instead of a thousands-grouped 1,250.
- Calculate and copy the summary. Sample variance and standard deviation require at least two observations.
Calculation rules and limits
- Signed decimals and scientific notation such as -1.5 or 2e3 are accepted. Absolute values must not exceed 1e100.
- Quartiles use linear interpolation at position (n − 1) × p in the sorted data, with p = 0.25 or 0.75.
- Population variance divides the squared deviations by n; sample variance divides by n − 1.
- Standard deviation is the square root of variance. Calculations use floating-point numbers; displayed values are limited to 12 significant digits.
Example
For 1, 2, 3, 4: mean and median are 2.5; Q1 is 1.75; Q3 is 3.25; population variance is 1.25 and sample variance is 1.66666666667.
Calculations run in your browser without uploading your calculation data. Changing an input clears the previous result; choose Calculate again to get the updated answer.
FAQ
Why do quartiles differ from another calculator?
Different quartile conventions exist. This tool uses linear interpolation at (n − 1) × p, so methods based on medians of halves can give different answers.
Can I use decimal commas?
No. Commas separate observations. Use 1.5 for one-and-a-half, and do not use commas to group thousands.
What happens with a single number?
The population variance is zero. Sample variance and sample standard deviation are undefined and are marked accordingly.
