Unzip Online — Extract ZIP, TAR and GZ Files

Extract archives without installing anything and repair garbled file names

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Drop an archive to extract here

One ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ (TGZ) or GZ file (up to 4 GB; TAR and GZ up to 1 GB unpacked). Files never leave your browser.

What it does

When you receive an archive and have no unzip program, or cannot install one on a work computer, drop it here. The file list appears at once; save the files you need one by one or all together. It also repairs a common annoyance: ZIPs made on Korean or Japanese Windows whose names turn into gibberish on a Mac or another Windows.

How to use

  1. Drop one archive on the box or press Choose archive.
  2. Tick the files to save. Everything that can be extracted starts selected; the search box filters by name.
  3. If names look wrong, change File name encoding (shown only when the names are not UTF-8).
  4. Save one file with its Save button, or several with Save selected as ZIP. In Chrome and Edge, Extract selected to a folder writes them, with subfolders, into a folder you pick.

How it works

  • Formats: ZIP (stored and Deflate, including ZIP64 and self-extracting EXE), TAR (POSIX ustar, pax headers, GNU long names), GZIP (RFC 1952, multi-member) and TAR.GZ. ZIP entries using other methods (BZIP2, LZMA…) are listed as unsupported.
  • Names: the UTF-8 flag or the Info-ZIP Unicode Path field wins; otherwise all names are decoded together as UTF-8, CP949 or Shift_JIS, whichever reads most naturally.
  • Integrity: every extracted file is checked against its CRC-32.
  • Limits: archives up to 4 GB, TAR and GZ up to 1 GB unpacked, and up to 1 GB saved at once. Entries that inflate beyond their declared size (zip bombs) are stopped.
  • Libraries: fflate (MIT) inflates Deflate data; reading the ZIP directory and TAR headers is done by this site’s own code.

Examples

Situation Steps
A ZIP from Korea shows garbled names Drop it → check the encoding (CP949) → Save selected as ZIP
Only one contract is needed from a big ZIP Search contract → Save that file
Peek into a server backup.tar.gz Drop it → browse the list → save what you need

To make a new archive, use Create ZIP; for garbled text inside a file, try the mojibake fixer.

FAQ

Why are some file names garbled, and can this fix them?

Older Windows archivers store names in the system's legacy code page (CP949 on Korean Windows, Shift_JIS on Japanese) without marking them, so other systems show gibberish. This tool keeps the raw name bytes, guesses the code page for the whole archive, and lets you pick another one. Saving the selection as a ZIP stores the names as UTF-8, so they stay readable everywhere.

Can it open 7z or RAR files?

Not yet. It extracts ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ (TGZ) and GZ. If you drop a 7z, RAR, ALZ or EGG file it tells you the format so you can use a desktop tool such as 7-Zip.

What about password-protected ZIPs?

Encrypted entries are marked and skipped; unencrypted files in the same archive can still be saved.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is read inside your browser. For ZIP, only the directory at the end is read when you open it; a file's data is read and inflated when you save it, so large ZIPs open quickly.

Is it safe with archives that contain "../" paths?

Yes. Paths that try to climb out of the target folder, and absolute paths, are cleaned before files are written to a folder or a new ZIP (Zip Slip protection).
