One square at a time.
Read the numbers. Dodge the mines. Uncover every safe square.
Changing difficulty starts a new game.
How to play
- Click to reveal; right-click to flag. Hold both mouse buttons on an open number to reveal its unflagged neighbors when its flag count matches. Incorrect flags can expose a mine.
- On a phone, choose Flag mode before tapping a square. Tap the same square again to remove its flag.
- Keyboard: Tab into the board · Arrow keys to move · Enter/Space to select · F to toggle a flag. On an open number, Enter/Space reveals neighbors like a two-button click.
- The timer starts on your first reveal and pauses while the tab or window is hidden. It resumes when you return.
About
Minesweeper is a deduction puzzle: each revealed number tells you how many neighboring squares contain mines. Use those clues to uncover every safe square. Play immediately in your browser without an account or installation.
How to play
- Pick Easy, Normal or Expert. Changing difficulty starts a new game.
- Reveal any square. Your first square and all its neighbors are safe.
- Right-click to mark suspected mines with flags. On a phone, choose Flag mode before tapping.
- Hold both mouse buttons on an open number to reveal unflagged neighbors when its flag count matches. Reveal every square without a mine to win.
- Select New game to start over at the same difficulty. Scroll inside larger boards to reach every square.
For keyboard play, Tab into the board and use arrow keys to move. On a closed square, Enter or Space performs the selected Reveal or Flag action. On an open number, either key reveals its neighbors like a two-button click. F places or removes a flag directly.
Rules
| Difficulty | Board | Mines | Safe squares to reveal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 9 rows × 9 columns | 10 | 71 |
| Normal | 16 rows × 16 columns | 40 | 216 |
| Expert | 16 rows × 30 columns | 99 | 381 |
- A number counts mines in the surrounding squares, including diagonals: up to eight neighbors. Blank revealed squares have no adjacent mines.
- Revealing a zero opens connected zero squares and their numbered boundary. Flagged squares remain closed.
- You may place up to as many flags as there are mines. Flags left counts unused markers; it does not verify how many mines you correctly identified.
- Revealing a mine ends the game and shows the mines and any incorrect flags.
- The first move is safe, but the game does not guarantee that every later position can be solved without guessing.
- Time starts on the first reveal and stops at the end. It pauses while the browser reports the tab as hidden.
Example
If a revealed 1 has exactly one unopened neighbor, that neighbor must be a mine. If you have already established the location of the one mine next to a 1, all its other neighbors are safe. A flag records your own conclusion; placing it does not check whether the conclusion is correct.
FAQ
What happens when I press both mouse buttons on a number?
If its neighboring flag count matches the number, all unflagged neighbors are revealed. Too few or too many flags do nothing. Incorrectly placed flags can leave a mine unflagged, causing it to explode and end the game.
Can my first move hit a mine?
No. Mines are placed after your first reveal, excluding that square and all its neighbors. Your first square is always a zero, opening connected empty squares and their numbered boundary. Later positions may still require a guess.
How do I place flags on a phone?
Choose Flag above the board, then tap an unopened square. Tap it again to remove the flag. Switch back to Reveal when you want to open squares.
Do I need to flag every mine to win?
No. You win by revealing every square without a mine. Flags are optional reminders. A flagged square cannot be revealed until you remove its flag.
Does the timer keep running in another tab?
The timer pauses when the browser reports this tab or window as hidden and resumes when you return. It starts with your first reveal and stops when you win or hit a mine.
Is my game saved?
The game runs in your browser without sending the board or score to a server. Refreshing or leaving the page clears the current game and time.
