The playbook
Black goes first. Place one stone on an empty intersection. Connect five or more stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win. A small mark identifies the last stone.
Freestyle rules: overlines win; there are no double-three or double-four restrictions. The casual computer checks immediate wins, threats and nearby patterns.
Tab to the board, use arrow keys to navigate, then Enter or Space to play. On small screens, you can scroll the board sideways.
Against the computer, Undo takes back your move and the computer response together.A five-stone challenge
Gomoku is a two-player connection game. Black and white take turns on a 15×15 board, trying to complete a line of five stones before the other side. Choose a computer opponent or share the device with a friend.
How to play
- Choose Play computer or Two players. Black moves first; you play black against the computer.
- Click or tap an empty intersection to place a stone.
- Connect at least five of your stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
- Use Undo to rethink a decision. Against the computer, it returns to the position before your last move, taking back the computer’s reply too.
The last stone has a small orange mark. A winning line is highlighted. For keyboard play, Tab to the board, navigate with arrow keys and press Enter or Space to place a stone. Home and End move along a row; Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End move to the board corners. On small screens, the board can scroll sideways.
Freestyle rules and an example
This game uses freestyle rules. A line of six or more also wins, and there are no forbidden double-three or double-four moves. It does not use Renju opening rules. If every intersection is occupied without a winning line, the result is a draw.
For example, if black occupies row 8, columns 4–7, placing black at column 8 completes five in a row. A gap inside the line must be filled: four stones with an empty intersection between them are not yet a win.
Look for two threats
Watch the opponent’s lines as closely as your own. A line of four with both ends open creates two winning opportunities. The computer checks immediate wins and threats, then scores nearby patterns; it is a lightweight practice opponent rather than a tournament engine.
