What it does
PDF to Excel moves tables you received as a PDF, such as invoices, quotes, statistics or bank statements, into an Excel XLSX file. Instead of retyping the figures or pasting text and splitting it into columns by hand, add the PDF and press Convert. Everything runs in your browser, so it is safe for work documents.
How to use
- Drop or choose one PDF file.
- Optionally enter a page range, such as 1-3, 5. Leave it empty to convert every page.
- Choose the sheet layout: one sheet per page (Page 1, Page 2 …) or all pages in one sheet, with one empty row between pages.
- Decide whether numbers should be saved as number cells.
- Press Convert to Excel. A preview of the first page appears with the XLSX download.
How tables are rebuilt
- Tables with lines: readable horizontal and vertical lines define the cells. Blank cells, blank rows and empty trailing columns are kept so values stay in their place.
- Merges and line breaks: rectangular merges are recovered where the line boundaries support them. Multiple lines within a cell remain line breaks in that cell.
- Size and appearance: recovered column widths and row heights are carried into Excel, with grid borders and pale blue headers. The result may still differ from the original.
- Tables without lines: rows and columns follow text baselines and repeated start or end positions. Spaces between words stay inside cells, missing values stay blank, and larger vertical gaps become empty rows (up to five).
- Times: clock times such as 9:30 or 17:00:15 become spreadsheet time cells.
- Numbers: thousands separators, decimals, minus signs, bracketed negatives and percentages become numbers. Dates, values with currency symbols and codes with a leading zero stay text. Under Number format in the PDF, choose 1,234.5 (decimal point) or 1.234,5 (decimal comma, as in German or French documents; spaces as thousands separators also work), because “1.234” means a different number in each.
- Not included: pages without text (pictures or scans) are reported rather than added as empty sheets. OCR and PDFs requiring a password to open are not supported. Original fonts and images are not copied. Existing OCR mistakes are not corrected; compare text and numbers with the original.
Example
A quote with the header “Item · Qty · Amount” followed by “Apple 3 1,200”, “Pear 12 (450)” and “Discount 12.5%” becomes three columns on the sheet “Page 1”. 1,200 is stored as 1200, (450) as -450 and 12.5% as 0.125 with a percent format, ready for a SUM.
FAQ
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Reading the tables and writing the Excel file both happen in your browser. The file is never uploaded, and the XLSX is saved only on your device.
Can it convert a scanned PDF?
In a scanned or photographed PDF the letters are pictures, so there is no table to read, and this tool does not do OCR. When no text is found you are told so; run the file through a program with text recognition first.
Will numbers end up as text?
With the number cells option on, values like 1,234, -12, accounting negatives such as (450) and percentages like 12.5% become real number cells you can add up. Codes with a leading zero, such as phone numbers or 007, stay text so the zero is kept. Turn the option off to keep every value exactly as shown.
The table does not look like the original.
When horizontal and vertical table lines can be read, the tool recovers cell boundaries, rectangular merges and line breaks within cells. Without lines, it uses text positions to rebuild rows and columns. Complex merges and tightly packed tables may need adjustment in Excel. Original fonts and images are not copied.
Some characters come out garbled.
When a PDF embeds a font without its character map, the text shows on screen but cannot be read back as text. If many characters look broken you get a warning. Export the PDF again from the original program.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
PDFs that ask for a password to open are not supported yet; remove the password first. PDFs that open freely but restrict printing or editing convert normally.
